FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about hosting, entering and using Comp World.
How much does it cost to host a competition?
Hosting on Comp World is a once-off payment of $99 AUD per competition. There are no ongoing fees and no hidden charges, and you keep 100% of what you charge — every entry fee, and every spectator ticket you sell through Comp World. By default, a small service fee is added to each competitor’s registration, and to each spectator ticket, and is paid by the buyer — not the host. Hosts can choose to cover it instead.
Can I see Comp World before I commit?
Yes — book a demo and a Comp World expert will take you through the full platform on a free one-hour video call, including the live on-the-day tools. Pick a time that suits you; if none of them work, suggest your own and we’ll confirm by email.
What kinds of competitions can I run?
Comp World is built for dance competitions of every style — jazz, hip hop, ballet, contemporary and more — as well as singing, music and drama. From a one-day local comp to a multi-day festival, you get sections, age categories, scheduling, scoring and results designed for live events.
Can I run a multi-day event with multiple sections and age categories?
Yes. Build as many sections as you need — each with its own type (solo, duo, trio, group), age limits, entry fee and duration — schedule them across multiple days, and use waitlists when a section fills up.
Can multiple judges score independently?
Yes. Each judge scores on their own device, and you choose how their marks combine (combined total or average) and how placements are ranked. Each section can use its own scoring criteria, and scores stay private until you choose to release them.
I already use competition software — what does moving to Comp World involve?
There is no automatic import: no competition platform hands its data to another, so your competition is rebuilt rather than migrated. Send us last season’s programme or section list and we will set up your sections, age groups, entry types and fees before your demo call. A draft competition is free and stays free — you only pay when you publish it for entries — so you can build next season in Comp World while this one is still running where it is. More on switching to Comp World.
What happens if the venue internet drops on the day?
Comp World pre-downloads every competitor’s music to the playback device, so the music keeps playing even if the venue Wi-Fi goes down. The live tools reconnect and resync automatically once you’re back online.
How do competitors’ songs get played on the day?
Competitors upload their backing tracks when they enter. On the day your operator plays them from the live music player — pressing play stamps the start time and advances the running order on every screen and phone, and every track is auto-leveled to a consistent volume.
What’s included for $99, and can I try it first?
The once-off $99 AUD covers running one full competition end to end — entries, scheduling, live tools, scoring, results, and spectator ticket sales with door scanning — with no ongoing fees, and you keep 100% of what you charge, entry fees and ticket prices alike. You can build a draft competition for free to get a feel for it, and only pay when you’re ready to take it live for people to enter.
How is Comp World different from entry-only software?
Most competition software stops at taking entries and payments. Comp World also runs the event: live scheduling, on-the-day music, real-time multi-judge scoring, audience and backstage screens, and instant results — all in one platform, with a free app and web entry for competitors.
How do competitors enter?
In the free Comp World app on iOS or Android, or in any web browser on a phone, tablet or computer, with nothing to download. They find your competition, register and pay, upload their music, choose partners for duos and trios, and complete any entry tasks you set. It works the same either way.
Can I give placements by score, like Gold, Silver and Bronze?
Yes. Give a placement to everyone who reaches a score you set, such as Gold from 85% and Silver from 75%, instead of only to the top few, or give your top places first and score bands to everyone after them. You name the placements, so Platinum or High Gold work too. You can also hide scores, so competitors see their placement and feedback without the numbers.
Can different sections be judged on different criteria?
Yes. Create named scoring sets, each with its own weighted criteria, and choose which sections use which: ballet judged on Technique and hip hop on Groove in the same competition. Every other section uses your default set.
Can competitors sign a waiver online?
Yes. Write your own waivers and switch them on, and every entrant e-signs online after entering. They can email the signing link to a parent. You see who has signed and download the signed copies.
Can I charge a fee per competitor, or give competitors a pass for the door?
Yes. Charge an administration fee, competitor passes, or both. A competitor pass is charged once per person however many sections they enter, and each person gets a printable pass with a QR code that your door team scans with the same Scanner Mode used for spectator tickets.
What happens if I have to cancel or move my competition?
Refund everyone affected in one batch. Choose the reason — the competition was cancelled, its dates changed, a section was cancelled, or an entrant withdrew — see exactly what it will cost, and confirm. Entries are withdrawn, tickets voided and every payer emailed. Refunds are paid from your own Stripe balance as it allows; in New Zealand you can top up a shortfall by card so they go out at once.
Can I practise before competition day?
Yes. Test Mode makes a private copy of your competition with sample competitors and music, moved to start today. Every tool works in it, so you and your volunteers can rehearse the music player, the Judge Tool and releasing results, and nothing reaches a real competitor or moves any money.
How do payments and payouts work?
Payments are processed securely through Stripe. Connect your bank account to receive entry-fee payments directly, and view total sales and financials in one place.
How do judges score performances?
Judges use the Judge Tool on their own device to view the current competitor, give written or audio feedback, and score in real time. Scores and results stay private until you, the host, choose to release them.
Can I sell spectator tickets through Comp World?
Yes. Set up as many ticket types as you need — General Admission, VIP, single-day passes — each with its own price, limit and valid days, and choose when sales open and close. Spectators buy from a link or QR code you share, with no app and no account needed, and ticket revenue shows as its own line on your sales dashboard and after-comp report. You keep 100% of the ticket price; by default a small service fee is added at checkout and paid by the buyer, or you can choose to cover it.
How do spectators get their tickets, and how do we check them at the door?
Tickets are emailed as a PDF the moment the buyer pays, carrying your competition logo and a scannable QR code. On the day you invite your volunteers to Scanner Mode in the Comp World app, and they scan tickets from their own phone — it catches duplicate scans and knows which day each ticket is valid for, so a single-day pass won’t get in on the wrong day.
Can spectators follow the competition live?
Yes. A live schedule shows the running order and results in real time, and spectators at the venue can open it from a QR code — no login required.
